Chair of Epistemologies of the Global South with Emphasis on Africa

The overarching vision of the Chair in Epistemologies of the Global South is two-fold: first is to drive the agenda of rethinking thinking itself at the present moment of uncertainties of knowledge; and the second is to reanimate and reconfigure African Studies as a vast global field of study drawing from epistemologies of the Global South.

Epistemologies of the Global South emerge from battlefields of history where racism, enslavement, colonialism, capitalism, patriarchy, and sexism are contested and delegitimized. It is social and political struggles that produce the epistemologies of the South. They have given birth to the fast-growing field of Decolonial Studies. They are plural and multi-vocal because of their emergence from multiplicity of social, economic and political struggles.

Thus, the Chair in Epistemologies of the Global South operates as a catalytic formation, which fertilises and animates knowledge in its methodological, epistemological, and disciplinary articulations. In short, the epistemologies of the Global South are deployed to contribute to the delivery of research agenda of the 'Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence'.

At the centre of epistemologies of the Global South are decolonial principles which privilege cognitive justice and epistemic freedom. The epistemologies of the Global South are largely experiential and experimental in orientation.

To deliver on this vision the professorship endeavours to generate new research questions, new theories, new approaches, and new methodologies which make new knowledge possible in the first instance.

Come join us – at the Chair in Epistemologies of the Global South – where we explore, rethink, unthink, experiment, subvert, and create new knowledge!
