Epistemologies of the Global South with Emphasis on Africa

Since June 2020, I have been holding the Chair of Epistemologies of the Global South with Emphasis on Africa at the University of Bayreuth. Before that I worked as Research Professor and Director for Scholarship Transformation at the Department of Leadership and Transformation (DLT) in the Principal and Vice-Chancellor’s Office at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, South Africa.

My research cuts across disciplines of humanities and social sciences and is concerned with decolonial thought, decolonial theory, decolonization, politics of knowledge, Black thought, African intellectuals, epistemologies of the Global South, imperial and colonial histories, pan-Africanism and African nationalism, African development and African futures, African identities and identity-based conflicts, histories and politics of South Africa and Zimbabwe. My overriding research goal is reanimate knowledge in an age of ‘uncertainties of knowledge’ through opening the canvas to ecologies of knowledges, mosaic epistemologies, intercultural translations, and rethinking of thinking itself.

My current research is premised on the overarching idea of the primacy of knowledge in creating realities (epistemology framing ontology) and contributions of epistemologies of the Global South to decolonization and reconfiguration of African Studies. Empirically, my research covers the changing ideas of Africa across different temporalities and recovery of African intellectual thought in general and thought of female African intellectuals in particular. Theoretically, I draw from African, Latin American, and Caribbean radical traditions and I have developed long-standing collaborations with Latin American, Caribbean, Asian, and African decolonial theorists. Geographically and regionally, I have extensive research experience in Africa in general and Southern Africa (South Africa and Zimbabwe) in particular.
